Emotional flooding is deadly to relationships, here’s why 💀
Let’s dive into what emotional flooding is, why it happens, and the long-term consequences of leaving it unaddressed.
Hello Fluffy Life 🫶🏿,
Have you ever experienced feeling emotionally overwhelmed? You know, when your heart starts beating too fast, you can’t make that hard decision and you become irritable?
That’s an example of emotional flooding, however the experience is different for everyone. Some may irrationally react using anger or aggression, which can lead to violent altercations, ruining relationships and legal consequences.
Although these examples help paint a picture of what it is like to experience emotional flooding, I do want to elaborate more on what it is and why it can be harmful.
What is emotional flooding?
Emotional flooding is the psychological experience of being overcome with a series of intense and strong emotions.
What happens when we experience emotional flooding?
You can expect a sudden rise in the production of stress hormones including cortisol and adrenaline. When these chemicals flood your nervous system, it becomes difficult for you to relax and think logically.
Why is emotional flooding deadly to relationships?
Because the hormones of adrenaline and cortisol ignite a fight or flight response in whoever is experiencing emotional flooding, it becomes far more difficult for that person to communicate calmly and clearly. This can lead to arguments, physical altercations, depression, and feeling isolated.
Even though this may be difficult to process, you can get through this and learn better coping mechanisms to avoid letting your emotions consume you. By joining my upcoming emotional development course, The Relationship Hut you can get access to tools that help you heal generational emotional trauma. Through this course you will be empowered to better manage your emotions, validate your feelings and set healthy boundaries for your long-term happiness.
