HOW TO DEAL WITH LONELINESS ABROAD
Hello Fluffy Life,
Dealing with loneliness when you relocate abroad can be challenging, especially because you are restarting your life. You're far from your familiar support network, tribe, and friends.
Here are some strategies to help you cope with and overcome loneliness:
Acknowledge Your Feelings: It's okay to feel lonely; it's a natural human emotion and this can happen to you even in your home country so accept that loneliness is part of this new life design, and don't be too hard on yourself for feeling this way.
Seek Support Online and Offline:
Online Communities: Join expat forums, social media groups, and platforms like Meetup, InterNations or Emotions City Alumni group to connect with others who are in a similar situation.
Local Meetups: Attend local events, or hobby groups where you can meet people who share your interests.
Be Friendly: You have to be friendly if you desire to create friends abroad. People will hardly reach out to you first because most countries are litigious and no one wants to be accused of harassment.
Stay in Touch with Loved Ones Back Home:
Regularly communicate with friends and family through video calls, messages, or social media to maintain your emotional connections.
Explore Your Surroundings:
Take the opportunity to explore your new environment. Go sightseeing, try local cuisine, and immerse yourself in the culture. This can help you feel more connected to your new home.
Volunteer or Get Involved:
Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and make new friends. Find local organizations or charities where you can contribute your time and skills.
Therapy or Counseling:
If loneliness becomes overwhelming and negatively affects your mental health, consider seeking professional help. Therapists or counselors can provide support and strategies for coping with loneliness.
Positive Self-Talk:
Practice positive self-talk and remind yourself that loneliness is temporary. Focus on the opportunities and personal growth that come with living abroad.
Keep a Journal:
Document your experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a journal. This can be a therapeutic way to process your emotions and track your journey.
Travel and Explore Nearby Places:
Take advantage of your location to explore neighboring cities and countries. Traveling can be a great way to meet new people and create memorable experiences.
Remember that loneliness is a common challenge for expats, and it can be a temporary phase as you adjust to your new surroundings. Be proactive in seeking connections and support, and give yourself time to adapt to your new life abroad. Home is where you find yourself but if your loneliness persists or worsens, consider seeking professional help or return to your country.
Namaste ❤️ .
