Mozi Minute: Money Making Clarity Test
I've found a simple way to identify if your team actually understands how they drive revenue: Ask them to explain it. Sounds obvious, but most can't. Here's what happens when you ask "How does what you do make the company money?": blank stares, vague answers about "helping the team", or my favorite “I’m on a lot of meetings.”
Here's what works:
Have every employee write down their answer. Not in a group. Not verbally. Written. Then, have their direct manager review it. If they can't clearly explain how their work connects to revenue in one paragraph, you have a problem.
Real example of a good answer from customer support: "When I solve customer problems quickly, they stay subscribed longer. Each month they stay is more revenue. Plus, happy customers leave good reviews which helps sales close more deals."
Bad answer: "I help the team by answering customer questions and solving their issues."
Two immediate benefits:
You identify which employees don't understand their revenue impact
You learn which managers haven't explained it well
Fix this by having managers work 1-on-1 with their direct reports until everyone can articulate their money-making impact. When people can explain how they drive revenue, it makes it more likely they actually do it.
